Traditional Plank Oak Worktops

The Traditional Plank Two Join Oak worktop is, as the name suggests, made from planks in the traditional way, with two joins. In this case however 'two join' means a maximum of two joins - quite often you'll only find one, and some time none - in any one single stave length.

When making the single wide stave oak worktops, we found we were producing a lot of beautiful lumber which was just too short to be made in to a worktop, but was flawed only by its length - or lack of it. Instead of chopping this up in to smaller staves for the classic butchers block range, we decided to make a whole new range of worktops called Traditional Plank. The idea for this came to us when we were dragging our poor children round another stately home, this time the kitchens in Burleigh House near Stamford - there was a four hundred year old kitchen worktop made exactly like this. 400 years of hard work in a castle kitchen is testing enough, so in effect I guess we copied it. As far as I am aware, we are the only company manufacturing this style of worktop.

The reason it works so well, like all of our worktops, is down to the quality of the raw ingredient. American White Oak of this quality - furniture grade - has such a beautiful grain and colour consistency that in these two join worktops it is really quite hard to see where the join is. To illustrate that, I took a photograph specifically of the joins, which can be seen on the right.

The oak for these wonderful worktops is from New York State. Up here close to the Canadian Boarder the full four seasons give the Oak trees just the climate they love and thrive in, hence the beauty of the grain. At the moment, the replanting rate of North American Hardwoods is around 2.7 new trees planted to each one felled - driven by hard economics of course, but an outstanding example of positive environmental practice.
